Study finds connect between indoor pools and respiratory problems

In a recently released Canadian study, it was found that workers who spent more than 500 hours a year or 10 hours a week working in an indoor pool are two to six times more likely to have coughs, asthma, and throat and eye irritation. The study conducted on close to 900 lifeguards found that symptoms lessened while they were not at work which would suggest that the indoor pool environment may be prompting the symptoms.

Published by the International Journal of Environmental Health Research, the study clearly shows the fact that indoor swimming pool environments may have damaging affects on the respiratory system due to the time spent in this environment.

Of the 870 surveyed, 601 were working as lifeguards at the time of the survey with ages ranging to 18 to 64 years. The average age for current lifeguards was 22, and former lifeguards 29 with three quarters of those surveyed being 29. Using an online questionnaire, the lifeguard’s exposure to indoor swimming pool environments was assessed and symptoms such as cough, sputum, shortness of breath, wheezing, lung congestion, sneezing, throat or eye irritation, hoarseness, stuffy nose and ear pain. Lifeguards were also asked if they have been diagnosed with asthma or used asthma medications.

A huge 78% of lifeguards reported having at least one of the respiratory symptoms in the previous year and 23% reported to have been diagnosed with asthma. Spending more than 10 hours a week at an indoor pool made lifeguards two and a half times more likely to have a cough or sore throat compared to those spending less than an hour a week. This extended exposure also meant that eye irritation was over four times more likely to occur. Those diagnosed with asthma exposed to more than 500 hours a year were 6 times more likely to have an asthma attack than those with little to no exposure to an indoor pool environment.

Most swimming pools are disinfected with chlorine-based disinfectants, because of that the reaction between the chlorine and organic matter such as skin cells, cosmetics, sunscreen and sweat in water creates many contaminants called disinfection-by-products (DBP). These contaminants are what gives the indoor pools their characteristic chlorine smell.

These contaminants paired with a high humidity in the indoor pools creates a damaging environment to the health of those who spend large amounts of time in the indoor pools. When the contaminants mix with a high chemical concentration they are trapped within the confines of an indoor room.

A dehumidifier is a vital part of an indoor pool to ensure that all users stay healthy and comfortable. Dehumidifiers are designed to remove excess humidity from your indoor pool air and deliver ventilation to control pollutants caused from normal pool activity.

EvoHeat has produced a range of domestic and commercial dehumidification units to tackle this very common problem seen in many indoor swimming pools.  The EvoHeat dehumidifiers are specifically designed to remove moisture from the air within a room without losing any warm air that is contained within.

Now you can control your EvoHeat pool heater from anywhere in the world. Ready, warm and waiting for your arrival. Doesn’t that sound hot?

The EvoHeat smartphone app allows pool owners to have the perfect pool temperature no matter where they are.  The perfect pool temperature is at their fingertips, with the ability to remotely control their EvoHeat pool heater via their smartphone or tablet.

–  The EvoHeat app allows pool owners to remotely:

– Turn the pool heater ON/OFF

– Set multiple timers

– Increase/decrease the pool temperature

– Record the last 30 days of pool heating data

– Receive heater alerts and messages

– Allow remote control access by a technician

The smartphone app helps pool owners optimise their energy efficiency further by knowing exactly what time of the day to set their timers.  The app stores the last 30 days of pool heating data, so they can see when their heat pump is running.  This allows owners to adjust their timers to run during off peak periods or maximise their solar panels during the day.

The EvoHeat app also provides better backup support by allowing an EvoHeat technician to remotely access their heat pump and its control system for diagnostics and fine turning (upon the customer’s request).

The EvoHeat app is a standard feature in all DHP-R Series and is available for upgrade on the Fusion & Force Series.  The EvoHeat app is available free to download from your iOS or Android device.

EvoHeat have YouTube videos available to help customers set up their pool heater app.

Evo Expand Into Hot Water Market

2017 has been a busy year for Australian owned and operated business, Evo Industries Australia.  Early last month, Evo announced its plans to expand their well-known energy efficient pool and spa heating range, better known as EvoHeat, to Singapore to keep up with their South-East Asia demand.

Business partners, Travis McNeill and Tony Mills have now confirmed their sights are also set on the hot water market with the launch of their latest business, EvoHeat Hot Water.

Evo are industry specialists in heat pump technology.  For over a decade Evo Industries Australia have been building a solid reputation for water and space heat pump technology that is used across the globe, including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

“In today’s modern world consumers are moving away from unsustainable products with high running costs and CO2 emissions.  At Evo, we match and exceed this global challenge with sustainable products that are extremely energy efficient, environmentally friendly and reliable.  Heat pumps are fast becoming a mainstream heating solution for domestic and commercial industries and our advanced range of heat pump technology provides consumers with a cleaner and greener solution to hot water”, says Travis McNeill, General Manager of the Evo Group of companies.

Tim Martin has joined the Evo team, appointed General Manager of the EvoHeat Hot Water division and brings over 10 years’ experience operating in Australian and global water heating markets with high profile manufacturers, distributors and clientele.

“As much as 30% of the typical Australian households’ energy consumption and carbon footprint can be attributed to hot water heating.  With rising energy costs and an increased emphasis on corporate environmental responsibility; businesses and consumers are looking for smarter alternatives to traditional (and costly) methods of hot water heating.” says Tim Martin, General Manager of EvoHeat Hot Water.

“Heat Pumps are the next evolution in hot water heating, and EvoHeat are leading the way with our Evo270. Designed for simple and cost-effective installation, whilst also achieving energy savings of up to 75% compared to conventional gas and electric water heating; it presents an economically viable solution in all applications. Everyone can save by upgrading to an Evo.”

The Evo270 provides a fast return on investment, and cumulative energy savings of as much as $10,000 throughout the life of the system. It is also equally at home in both domestic and commercial applications; providing reliable, efficient, clean, and safe, year-round hot water.

The Evo270 is also registered with the Australian Federal Government Clean Energy Regulator as an energy efficient water heater, meaning all Evo270 customers are eligible to apply for an STC rebate which contributes to the purchase of their system.

The Evo270 is just the beginning of hot water series that EvoHeat Hot Water plan to release.

Brisbane based, Evo Group of companies now include 4 divisions including Evo Industries Australia, Evo Industries Singapore, EvoHeat Hot Water and Evo Energy Technologies.

EvoHeat Going Global!

Travis McNeill and Tony Mills began the Evo Industries Australia business back in 2006 with very little expectations. It was a side project aimed to help both men support their growing families and keep them from getting bored during their day jobs.

Fast forward more than 10 years and Evo Industries Australia, better known as EvoHeat has become one of the industry leading specialists in pool and spa heating technology.

Earlier this year, EvoHeat were involved in the largest heat pump installation in Australia with 19 EvoHeat CS200 GEN2 heat pumps installed at WhiteWater World. Now over 30 slides, water-rides and pools are being heated year-round to a comfortable 27 degrees using EvoHeat’s energy efficient heap pump technology designed to provide Dreamworld with a massive 3,610kW heating capacity. This heating upgrade now saves Dreamworld over 70 percent on their annual water heating costs and cuts their existing carbon emissions by over 35 percent.

“The last few years have been particularly good for us. We have added new products to our EvoHeat range and also started up a sister company, Evo Energy Technologies, that provides top line cogeneration and trigeneration products into the Australian market. We have moved to a large warehouse to cope with the growing demand and employed more staff by extending our sales team, employing a full time Technical Support Manager, Marketing team and also a General Manager of our 270 Series hot water system range. We are already making plans to expand our Brisbane Head office and warehouse to cater for the growth”, General Manager, Travis McNeill said.

It’s not just the Australian market that has kept Evo Industries Australia busy, with a number of large heating projects also taking place in South East Asia.

“We have seen an increase in pool heating requests from overseas, particularly in the last few years. Just recently the Kuala Lumpur Aquatic Centre required a major upgrade of their pools in preparation of the SEA and Asean Para Games. Evo were contracted to upgrade their diving pool, 50m swimming pool and their training pool with our heat pump technology. One of the unique benefits of our heat pump technology is the ability to cool as well as heat which makes our product more versatile especially for aquatic and sporting facilities”, National Business Manager, Tony Mills said.

Due to their high demand, especially in South East Asia, Mr. McNeill & Mr. Mills have made the strategic business decision to expand their business with the launch of their expansion company, Evo Industries Singapore. The new branch will officially launch later this month, with their head office based in Beach Road, Singapore.

“We are extremely excited about the possibilities that Evo Industries Singapore offers. Having an office based in Singapore allows us to readily reach more of our customers. Over the last decade we have seen exponential growth and it doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon”, says Mr. McNeill.
