HOW DOES A HEAT PUMP WORK?

A heat pump is a different way to use renewable energy to heat your pool water.  Operating on a similar principal to an air conditioner system, a heat pump uses environmentally friendly refrigerant that extracts the latent heat from the air and transfers the heat into the pool water through a series of processes.

Heat pump process

A heat pump is a device that uses a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. Heat pumps are typically used to pull heat from the outside and transfer them into a room however can be used for the cooling of an area as well.

Heat works by moving from an already warm object to a cooler object. If an object that is outdoors is made to be colder than the outside air temperatures, then the object will absorb any heat from the air. By applying this principle to the heat pumps, it can be seen how they can absorb heat even in cold temperatures.

A refrigerant which is an extremely important part of the heat pump works by absorbing heat from the environment around it, as the refrigerant compresses it becomes warmer until it is warmer than the inside room temperature. Once the refrigerant reaches this stage, the air is then transferred into the area. As the warm air leaves, the refrigerant begins to take in the cold air outside and expands as it cools. Once the refrigerant is colder than the outside temperature, the warm air begins to enter the unit and the cycle continues.

There are many types of refrigerants, many being harsh on the environment and contributing to degradation on the ozone layer and increase in greenhouse gases. For example, R22 has a damaging effect on the ozone layer and is now being phased out of use for its damaging effects. R410a is much more environmentally safe and extremely more efficient.

EvoHeat heat pumps use the R410A refrigerant which is the safest for the environment, more efficient, offer better air quality and improve the reliability of the unit.

For a heat pump unit to achieve its maximum efficiency, it must be maintained regularly with regular checkups. Ensure your heat pump is clean and installed so that it allows the maximum airflow in order to heat your pool as efficiently as possible.
